Ethereal, demented, textural, storied. These are some words that could be used to describe Rodarte, my favourite fashion label. It’s almost a cliché for intelligent fashion girls to claim love for this brand but I don’t care. Nothing will stop me from declaring my adoration for the Mulleavy sisters and their fantastical, weird clothes.
Kate and Laura Mulleavy founded their label in 2005. Rodarte was named after the Mulleavys’ mother’s maiden name. The sisters, originally from Pasadena California, had been passionate about fashion their entire lives. Despite their interest in the industry, Kate and Laura never studied fashion formally. Both women are self-described geeks and have attended Berkeley, where Kate majored in art history and Laura studied English literature. Their requisite degrees helped expose them to a world of culture and knowledge that would later come alive in their designs.
Rodarte won the CFDA in 2009. The Council of Fashion Designers in America is the fashion industry equivalent to an Oscar. As if their buzzed-over collections weren't enough already, the win catapulted them to rockstar status. The Mulleavy sisters have clothed many celebrities for awards shows over the years. In December 2009, Rodarte launched a capsule collection at Target, a popular American discount retailer. The official spokesperson for the line was 13 year old Tavi Gevinson of Style Rookie blog fame.
